The Shadow Unit is part of the BAU, however they don’t deal with normal serial killers. These guy’s deal with serial killers with special abilities. The Shadow Unit has a group of human’s that are called Alphas, they also have a few Beta’s (people who have special abilities but are not CONTROLLED by those abilities) and then you have the Gamma’s who are the serial killers who are controlled by the abilities. The Gamma’s never know they are one, kind of like how a serial killer doesn’t know they are a serial killer until they commit the act, and it the Shadow Unit who go out and find them, and stop them.
Now the idea was based upon many different TV shows, X-Files and Criminal Minds being the two I remember.
I found it more Criminal Mind like in certain parts, mainly I found one of the character’s to reflect another from the show, which annoyed me some what, because it was as though the author’s couldn’t come up with a brilliant idea of there own.
In the first story it got rather confusing since the author kept using first names, last names, nicknames before a reader could be comfortable and confident about who they were addressing. It was hard enough trying to remember what they looked like never mind all that information going around as well!
Once you get into the story, although I found it hard to do due to the reason above; I really enjoyed it. The stories were interesting and the short tales in between gave a bit of depth to certain character’s – although the last one about Lau was a bit disappointing, since we didn’t learn that much about her character so it seemed a bit off.
Overall however it is a very good concept and I want to read more about the cases the team do and learn more about the individual characters as well.
